‘Dirty Jobs’ Star Mike Rowe Now a Landscaper

I’m a huge fan of Dirty Jobs and while watching it the other day I saw Mike Rowe talking about Project Evergreen’s Green Care for Troops, an organization that helps thousands of volunteers provide free lawn and landscaping services to military families while their loved ones serve.

GreenCare for Troops is a nationwide outreach program coordinated by Project EverGreen that connects local green industry professionals with men and women serving our country in the armed forces away from home.

GreenCare is in the process of helping hundreds of volunteers provide free lawn and landscape services for thousands of military families nationwide.

Its a great cause and you can learn more about it here.

WASPs awarded Congressional Gold Medal

The first female military pilots received the Congressional Gold Medal at a ceremony in the Capitol March 10.

Almost 70 years ago, the Women Airforce Service Pilots were disbanded with little fanfare, but this ceremony was a way to make things right for the trailblazers, said Secretary of the Air Force Michael Donley.

More than 200 WASPs attended the event, many of them wearing their World War II-era uniforms. The audience, which Speaker Nancy Pelosi noted was one of the largest ever in the Capitol and too large to fit into Emancipation Hall, also included their families, as well as the families of those who have since died or couldn’t travel.

Pat Tillman’s legacy: more help for military veterans in college

If the late Pat Tillman is remembered for his selflessness, then it seems fitting that the foundation created in the professional football star-turned-soldier’s name would ask the same of the veterans it serves.

Now partnered with eight universities across the country, the Pat Tillman Foundation’s Tillman Military Scholars program offers funding to veterans who demonstrate a record of service to their communities and pledge to continue those activities. The program disbursed $642,000 to its inaugural class of 52 veterans and their families last year, and its ultimate goal is to provide $3.6 million annually — an amount equivalent to the lucrative Arizona Cardinals contract Tillman turned down to join the Army Rangers after Sept. 11, 2001.
