During the Vietnam War, Richard Barnett served his country as a member of the United States Army. He entered into service during the Korean War, however, prior to his graduation from basic training, the war had ended. On the advice of his commanding officer, Richard got out of the army with plans to obtain his degree and then reenlist and become an officer. He enlisted in the active reserves while in college and then after graduation, he tried to go back into the active army. With the down sizing that occurred after Korea, the army wasn’t taking anybody new onto active duty so he remained with the reserves until 1967. The Army needed personnel in Vietnam so Richard went back onto active duty and became the chief systems engineer for a new wide band communications system in Vietnam.
